When divorce is inevitable, you have the option to divorce with integrity. Getting a divorce sucks, but sometimes it’s the only solution when the relationship hits the end of the road. Emotions tend to run high when it comes to this process.
However, one of the things that I’ve noticed as a Pasadena Mediator, and divorce lawyer, is that spouses demonstrate a much higher level of integrity in their divorce when they proceed amicably and not through the family court system. Amicable spouses are far more transparent and cooperative.
Unlike in court, spouses’ lawyers share less information and frequently spin the truth. When spouses see their lawyers holding back information in court, the spouses are encouraged to do the same with each other. This behavior drives up the cost of a divorce, tears apart the spouses’ trust in each other (which harms co-parenting efforts down the line), and takes much longer to reach the end of the divorce.
A litigated, scorch-earthed divorce only benefits the lawyers and leaves the spouses financially and emotionally in pure ruin. Avoid it!
